Advising

We strive to provide you, our students, with quality and timely advising and help with your career awareness, academic success and personal enrichment. To make sure that your advising meetings go as smoothly as possible, let’s make sure that you are in the right place.

ISE PRO TIP: If you are any of the following, you will meet with a College of Engineering Academic advisor instead of an ISE advisor.

  • A freshman that has “undesignated” as their major
  • A student who wants to switch to ISE

The Advising Compact

As the student, you commit to:

  • Taking ownership of your education
  • Keeping up to date with university, college and department curriculum requirements
  • Consulting with academic advisors at each pre-registration period and  other times as needed
  • Reviewing the ISE Advising web page and ISE Resource Guide before you send an email
  • Using the appropriate forms to help the advising team assist you
  • Arriving at appointments prepared with any required paperwork and forms
  • Checking degree audits before and after enrollment and each semester to track your progress through your degree

ISE PRO TIP: You should always refer to the advising team’s most recent announcements and documentation for instructions and details.

As the advising team, we commit to:

  • Applying all university policies, department procedures and advising processes fairly and consistently
  • Being available for appointments at appropriate times and places
  • Assisting you with following proper procedures for various exceptions
  • Referring you to campus resources, such as special testing or counseling, as needed
  • Reviewing your requests promptly
  • Releasing your advising hold no more than 72 business hours after your advising appointment
  • Documenting your advising discussion in the SuccessGPS platform (individual appointments only) for future insight

The Advising Process

As an NC State student, you must be advised before you can register for classes. Each semester, you will receive an email from our advising team with the information and links you need to sign up for an advising appointment. ISE PRO TIP: You are encouraged to have your advising appointment at least one week before your scheduled course registration period because it can take up to three business days to lift your registration hold.

Select your Advising Method

To prepare you for your class registration and get your academic hold removed from your account, we offer you three ways to get advising: peer advisors, assigned advisors and group or drop-in advising sessions. the first step is to set up your advising appointment. To make this step as easy as possible, you can choose one of three advising methods, whichever one suits you best.
