SEMINAR SERIES | Jay Wilkins | Army Research Lab

Army Research Office

Please welcome Dr. Jay Wilkins to the ISE Department. Dr. Wilkins serves as the program manager at the Army Research Office and will share how he models complex systems.

As always refreshments are available in 428 Daniels Hall 30 minutes before the seminar begins.

Abstract

There are four enduring and cross-cutting mathematical interests in defense and intelligence research, each of which is reflected in the four mathematical science divisions at the Army Research Office: human science (bio-mathematics), uncertainty (probability and statistics), scientific computing, and complexity. This last interest is the focus of my program – what is currently called the Modeling of Complex Systems Program at ARO. In this talk, I will give an overview of ARO’s goals, objectives, and funding opportunities in mathematics and other research areas. I will also give a very broad overview of the mathematics and science of complexity both in general and as it relates to defense,
intelligence, and social science interests. This will be a largely non-technical talk requiring little background, tracing some of the history of complex systems and complexity science in mathematics and other areas, some of the current open problems, and what the Army and other agencies and groups are doing in their search for solutions and methodologies.

Bio

Dr. Wilkins received his B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Georgia Tech, Master’s Degree in Mathematical Sciences from Clemson University, and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. He then received a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Connecticut, where he worked under Dr. Alexander Teplyaev in Analysis, Geometry, and Mathematical Physics on Fractals. After that, Dr. Wilkins was a professor for several years at UNC-Pembroke before taking the position of Program Manager for the Modeling of Complex Systems Program at the US Army Research Office.
