NC STATE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING (ISE) STUDENT TEAMS SOLVE REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS FOR N.C. COMPANIES

Industrial Engineers Compete for Top Honors at Senior Design Day on Monday, April 27

WHAT:

NC State Senior Design Day Competition: ISE student engineering teams present solutions developed for North Carolina-based companies as part of Senior Design Day. The competitive program includes teams from ISE, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Textile Engineering and the Engineering Entrepreneurs Program. ISE will have 15 project presentations competing among 101 teams for top honors.

The Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) is one of the top Industrial Engineering programs in the country. In a job market where many college graduates are underemployed and saddled with debt, ISE graduates are in high demand worldwide for their expertise in advanced analytics, logistics, systems and manufacturing technologies. ISE reports that 93 percent of their graduating classes are recruited and employed prior to or upon graduation, with companies offering more jobs than there are candidates to fill them. As a result, enrollment in the department has more than doubled.

WHEN/WHERE:

Monday, April 27 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Winning teams announced at 4p.m.
Talley Student Union at NC State – State Ballroom, Second Floor
2610 Cates Avenue – Raleigh, NC

WHY:

The Senior Design Project is an important part of the mission of NC State ISE to engage with local and regional companies to solve real-world problems. The student projects are not classified as research because they address critical operational issues and are designed to have measurable impact. Companies may assign budget parameters or the teams may be required to work within the constraints of existing resources and assets.

WHO:

Interview opportunities with
• Dr. Anita Vila-Parrish, ISE Director of Undergraduate Programs
• Senior Design Project student team members and faculty advisors

SPECIAL PROJECTS:

ISE will have 15 team presentations at Senior Design Day. Examples include:

Lenovo (North American fulfillment center, Whitsett (unless Dr. V-P told you differently) Morrisville, NC) – Simulation models demonstrating ways to increase efficiencies in order picking and packaging, increasing volume of same-day shipping by 20 percent.

Flanders Air Filtration (manufacturing plant, Smithfield, NC) – Process optimization improving the utilization of human resources to increase daily production rate, generating value impact of over $300,000 per year.

Cummins Engines (manufacturing plant, Rocky Mount, NC) – Work station redesign to reduce human error and reworks, generating a value impact of over $100,000 per year.

About NC State ISE:

NC State University’s Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering is among the top ranked programs in the country. The department brings together industry professionals and academic leaders across innovative and cutting edge curriculum and technology development, including regenerative medicine, health systems and 3D printing.
