Automation Lab | NC State ISE

Welcome to the Automation Lab

ISE’s Automation Laboratory at NC State University’s Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) department provides students with hands-on experience in modern manufacturing and automation technologies. The lab features state-of-the-art manufacturing assembly equipment and controls, including high-speed pick-and-place machines, programmable logic controllers, a hybrid assembly line, and both industrial and collaborative robots. These advanced tools help students explore and develop automation solutions that apply across various industries while following industry standards from organizations such as the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).

As an open teaching laboratory, the facility attracts students from multiple disciplines who want to expand their automation knowledge through lab-based coursework, hands-on research, and collaborative projects. The lab serves as a hub for interdisciplinary work, offering opportunities for students to engage in innovative projects, coursework, and summer STEM camps that inspire the next generation of engineers and problem solvers.

Beyond academic learning, the lab fosters an environment where students gain valuable real-world experience by tackling industry-relevant automation challenges. Advanced students staff the laboratory, contributing to research and development while mentoring and guiding their peers through complex automation systems. This dynamic setting helps students develop critical technical and problem-solving skills essential for careers in automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.
