Women in ISE Alumni Panel

On February 10th, the DEI Committee teamed up with ISE GSA to host the Women in ISE Alumni Panel. Alumni Tiffany Sargent and June Taylor shared their experiences from their time at NC State and what they have learned throughout their extensive careers. Both alumni emphasized the support of the people in the ISE department during their time at NC State and encouraged students to seek out mentors throughout their professional careers.

Students of Color

The ISE affinity group for Students of Color (SoC) met up twice in the 2021 spring semester. Attached are the flyers for both events.

The first event was the SoC Kickoff on Thursday, March 11th at 7 pm. We introduced the group’s purpose/goal and answered any questions the attendees had about this. Then we did an icebreaker, attendees answered questions on Google Jamboard and we would discuss it as a group. We concluded by announcing our second event and creating a group chat to stay connected.

The second event was the SoC Videoyard Game Night on Thursday, April 1st at 7 pm. We played a series of games using the website Backyard.co, it was fun and interactive as the site had its own video/audio platform. We concluded with giving the attendees a form for them to submit what events they would like to see in the future and if they want to lead it.

Women in ISE

The first meeting of the Women in ISE affinity group hosted Dr. Jennifer Martineau, co-author of Kick Some Glass: 10 Ways Women Succeed at Work on Their Own Terms and president and founder of Leap & Inspire Global, LLC. Dr. Martineau led us through an interactive presentation based on her book in which she provided data on women in the workplace as well as methods and advice for success. We had around twenty women in attendance, all of whom were able to participate, discuss, and relate the presentation points to our own experiences within ISE. We were additionally able to give away five copies of Dr. Martineau’s book. We are so grateful to Dr. Martineau and all those who attended for helping kick-start an amazing community for all those who identify as women in ISE!

Out of State/Transfer Students

An an ice cream social about “getting the inside scoop” was hosted during the Spring 2021 semester. Each student was provided the opportunity to receive a free Howling Cow ice cream scoop from The Market in Talley. Both graduate and undergraduate students attended and we were able to brainstorm ways to engage this population moving forward with an emphasis on beginning of the year activities. This is a great opportunity to engage graduate students as many of them are out-of-state and willing to impart knowledge to the undergraduate community.
