A Brief History

Workgroup for Intelligent Systems in Manufacturing and Design

The WISDEM group was formed in 1995 when Professor Robert E. Young returned from a sabbatical at the Technical University of Aachen in Aachen, Germany. There he was became aware of fuzzy logic and learned much about it through discussions with colleagues and students. The initial development of the fuzzy constraint technical basis was done while he was at Aachen. Upon his return he completed this development. Dr. David Ress was a PhD student at NCSU and became interested in Professor Young's work with exceptional programming and system analysis skills. Dr. Ress immediately understood conceptually what was needed to implement Professor Young's ideas into a working system and wrote the FuzCon constraint modeling software. Dr. Ress left NCSU in 1999 for InfoScribe Corporation but continues to collaborate with Professor Young. Mr. Neil El Himam incorporated fuzzy trapezoidal numbers and operators into the system in 2002.
