Workgroup for Intelligent Systems
in Design and Manufacturing

Department of Industrial Engineering
North Carolina State University
Raleigh, NC 27695

The Workgroup for Intelligent Systems in Design and Manufacturing develops new technology for solving problems in computerized manufacturing systems. Areas specifically addressed include manufacturing control, process planning, material handling, concurrent engineering, and intelligent systems. The group maintains close links with industry to ensure that its research can be directly applied to improve industrial competitiveness. During the past six years it has focused on developing interactive constraint satisfaction technology to address these areas. This has included its formal mathematical basis, the implementation of modeling environments, and building applications to solve specific problems. Recent work is investigating what role fuzzy mathematics may have to solve problems in these areas. To explore this role the group has developed FuzCon, a fuzzy interactive constraint satisfactions system.
