Welcome!

The Rapid Prototyping program at NCSU is under the direction of Dr. Ola Harrysson, Associate Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering. Our lab supports the work of several professors and numerous researchers, undergraduate students, and industrial partners.

Projects in the lab are truly multidisciplinary, reaching well beyond the field of Industrial & Systems Engineering into areas such as aerospace, human and veterinary medicine and materials science. Our facility currently has 6 commercial RP machines which are actively in use.  We are also fortunate to have access the department's adjacent full modern machine shop and the Furniture and Manufacturing and Management center's extensive material testing and evaluation capabilities and expertise.

Primary Areas of Work

  • Building and finishing of plastic and metal prototypes for various student research and semester projects
  • Development of processing parameters for Electron Beam melting
  • Development of novel orthopedic implants (with the NCSU College Veterinary Medicine and the NCSU/UNC joint Biomedical Engineering program)
  • Supporting NASA and several major aerospace companies in development and evaluation of the Electron Beam melting process for Titanium and other metals
