The Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) celebrated 75 years of excellence at NC State with its 75th Anniversary Symposium and Celebration held on November 2-3, 2006.

The 2-day celebration began at noon on Thursday, November 2nd  with the symposium "Leading-Edge Systems Engineering in Medical and Bioscience Industries," held at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC) in the Research Triangle Park, NC, and co-sponsored by Wyeth Biotech and WakeMed Health & Hospitals. Dr. Leslie Alexandre, CEO of NCBC, was the keynote speaker at the luncheon kick-off. At this event, leading experts from medical device manufacturing, pharmaceutical and bioprocessing manufacturing firms, as well as health systems organizations, participated in panel discussions that focused on the evolving role of industrial and systems engineers. Attendees were invited to join area ISE alumni and current faculty, staff and students of the Fitts Department at a gala reception immediately following the symposium.

Events on Friday, November 3rd,  started with a "walk down Hillsborough Street" as attendees learned of the history of the department through vintage photos and remembrances by former department heads and faculty members.  This event, held at the
McKimmon Conference and Training Center on the NC State campus, was highlighted with a luncheon address by ISE faculty member and Dean of Engineering Louis Martin-Vega, who spoke on "Industrial and Systems Engineering-Its Future at NC State and Around the World". In addition to serving as Dean of Engineering, Dr. Martin-Vega is President-Elect of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE).

Additionally, the department honored its inaugural class of distinguished alumni.  The 12 inductees included:
M. Tayfur Altiok (MSIE, 1980; PhD, 1982) ISE Department Head, Rutgers University

Worley "H" Clark Jr. (BSIE, 1956) President & CEO, Nalco Chemical (retired)

Hugh M. Duncan (BSIE, 1955) President, SPS Co., Inc. (retired)

Edward P. Fitts (BSIE, 1961) Founder & CEO, Dopaco (retired)

A. Fred Gant (BSIE, 1955) Vice-President, Key Pharmaceuticals (retired)

James A. Hackney III (BSIE, 1962) President & CEO, Hackney Industries (retired)

Ross W. Lampe Jr. (BSIE, 1977) President, SMD Software

Leon F. McGinnis (MSIE, 1973; PhD, 1975) ISE Gwaltney Professor, Georgia Tech

Richard E. Nance (BSIE, 1962; MSIE, 1966) Dahlgren Professor Emeritus, Virginia Tech

John B. Vaughan (BSFMM, 1952) President, Vaughan Furniture (retired)

Edward I. Weisiger Jr. (BSIE, 1982) President & CEO, Carolina Tractor

Edgar S. Woolard Jr. (BSIE, 1956) President & CEO, DuPont Corporation (retired)

The department currently has 23 faculty members, more than 200 undergraduates and more than 100 graduate students.  It consistently ranks among the top 12 industrial engineering programs nationally, according to the annual U.S. News and World Report survey, and was recently endowed with a $10 million gift from Edward P. Fitts, founder and former chief executive officer of Dopaco, a Pennsylvania-based global packaging company.  The commitment is the largest gift ever received by the College of  Engineering from an individual donor and the largest endowed gift to academics in NC State's history.  The endowment supports efforts to design curricula for emerging fields, to attract and retain excellent faculty members and to expand research opportunities for faculty and students.
