Maybe it’s the vitamins

Maybe it’s the vitamins

Allen Fred Gant never sits still. After earning his bachelor's degree at NC State, he held executive positions with U.S. Vitamin, Miles Laboratories, Merck, Pfizer, and others. But also during his career, he designed and built high-tech pharmaceutical plants in Puerto Rico, Florida, Ohio and North Carolina. On top of all that, he directed the process development of drugs that sold worldwide. Now that he’s retired (hah!), he’s a member of (among others) the North Carolina Engineering Foundation and volunteers for the Campaign for NC State Students.

A major award for major contributions

A major award for major contributions

The Watauga Medal is the highest nonacademic award bestowed by NC State, honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the university. This year, the Watauga Medal was awarded to only three honorees – one of whom was our very own department alumnus, James A. Hackney III. Even while operating his own successful business – Hackney Industries Inc. – James participated in a host of important activities ranging from serving on our Advisory Council to helping found NC State's Centennial Campus.

A company man. Big time

A company man. Big time

Edgar “Ed” Woolard, Jr., spent his entire career with DuPont, working his way through the ranks from industrial engineer to chief executive officer before his retirement in 1995. It would take an entire page to list all of Ed Woolard’s achievements, honors and contributions to his field, to the College of Engineering and to the university. Suffice it to say it’s an impressive list and readily explains why we consider him to be one of our most distinguished alumni, valuable advocates and treasured friends.

The man who gave us his name

The man who gave us his name

Edward P. Fitts is an active and staunch supporter of the Department of Industrial Engineering. In 1999, he endowed the Edward P. Fitts Scholarship, one of the largest scholarships in the department, and then went on to endow the Edward P. Fitts Industrial Engineering Professorship. Ed then turned his efforts toward helping the Department of Industrial Engineering achieve a top-five ranking nationally and, to that end, generously endowed the department with a $10 million gift. We were pleased and proud to rename the department in his honor.

How we spell alumni: f-r-i-e-n-d

We are fortunate to have a group of alumni, supporters and donors who are committed to helping the department continue to grow and thrive.

What’s more, we boast alumni who have gone out into the world and achieved important things - things that have made a difference in the way we all live, work and play.

They have distinguished themselves, and they have distinguished the department. They are, in every sense of the word, our distinguished alumni.

Support is always welcome

Gifts and contributions to support our academic programs are put to good use—scholarships and fellowships for students, workshops, research facilities and grants, and much more.

Thanks to our foundation, benefactors are able to bequeath funds and specify how those funds are to be spent.
