Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering, MSIE

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree involves some depth of study in a specified area of concentration and requires a research thesis. It is a research-oriented degree and is ordinarily considered to be a prerequisite for entry to the Ph.D. program. Students pursuing this degree receive priority consideration for assistantship awards. Graduates who complete this degree might work in research staff positions in consulting firms, industrial organizations, or government but not at levels as analytically advanced as Ph.D.'s. The M.S. graduate here would have basic understanding of IE with some depth of study in the general area of concentration as well as in the specific thesis topic. A minimum of 30 hours, including 9 hours in a minor and 3-6 hours of thesis research, is required for this degree. As part of a breadth requirement, students must select a course from three of the five breadth requirement groups, as well as one course from a group that includes the fields of statistics, computer science, and mathematics.
