To specialize in OS&E, students take three safety courses, the two required courses listed below, and their choice of one course from the elective list. Over time, additional courses may be considered for inclusion in the elective list.
Required:
IE 741: Occupational Safety Engineering (3, S, beginning 2001), NCSU
IE 794A : Systems Safety (3, F, beginning 2001), NCSUElectives (choose one):
PSY 710R: Forensic Human Factors (3, F 2001), NCSU
MAE 510: Effects of Noise and Vibration (3, F), NCSU
MAE 514: Industrial Noise Control (3, S), NCSU
ENVR 141: Air and Industrial Hygiene (3, F), UNC-CH
ENVR 144: Industrial Toxicology (2, S), UNC-CH
ENVR 149: Health Hazards of Industrial Operation (3, S), UNC-CH
EPID 125: Injury as a Public Health Problem (3, F), UNC-CH
EPID 160: Principles of Epidemiology (3, F&S), UNC-CH
EPID 168: Fundamentals of Epidemiology (4, F), UNC-CH
EPID 268: Theory and Quantitative Methods in Epidemiology (4, F), UNC-CH
EPID 276: Occupational Epidemiology (3, S), UNC-CH
To specialize in OS&E, students take three courses in the area of ergonomics and Human Factors, as listed below. All are offered at NCSU.
Required:
IE 544: Occupational Biomechanics (3, F)
PSY/IE 740: Human Factors in Systems Design (3, F)
and,
either PSY 744: Human Information Processing
or PSY 745: Human Performance
Either during the final semester of course work or after all course
work is completed each student specializing in OS&E engages in an applied
practicum, requiring a minimum of 190 hours of work. This applied
practicum was created for the express purpose of giving students an introductory
work experience specific to occupational safety and ergonomics. Students
perform a specific, defined work project through an assigned employer/sponsor.
The student keeps a project notebook which tracks project milestones, problems,
solutions, etc. The student’s advisor reviews the notebook weekly,
to monitor the student's progress. The student prepares a technical
report summarizing the work experience, and prepares and presents a seminar
at the work site. An evaluation report is completed by the employer/sponsor
and the student's advisor.
