Clarence Smith has been a lecturer of Industrial Engineering at N C State since 1978, having served as extension specialist (appointed jointly with Industrial Extension Service) from 1978-84 and assistant head of the Department since 1984. From 1969-78, he was staff industrial engineer with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. He received the C.A.Anderson Outstanding IE Faculty Award in 1980, was elected to the Academy of Outstanding Teachers in 1984, named Alumni Distinguished Professor in 1985, honored as the College of Engineering Outstanding Advisor in 1990, 1996 and 2006 and is the recipient of the 2005 NCSU Faculty Advising Award. A past director of the Work Methods and Methods Engineering Division of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, he is the 1991 Phil Carroll Award winner and a 2005 IIE Fellow.
